A domestic and political drama of hope and
disillusionment set in a lower middle class household in
South London. The Elliots live their unhappy suburban
life until Kate brings home a surrogate for her son
killed in the war, the charismatic Bohemian George
Dillon (Joseph Fiennes), an aspiring actor and penniless
writer.
Charismatic out of work actor George Dillon walks into
the home of a suburban housewife, and turns her life
upside down. Mrs Elliot thinks of him as a son, but her
attractive divorced sister, and two single daughters,
have different ideas...
