Opened in 1882, the Playhouse Theatre accommodates 782 theatregoers on 3 levels. It was originally called the Royal Avenue Theatre.

After extensive refurbishment the Playhouse was renamed and reopened in 1907.

The Playhouse was used as a BBC Radio studio between 1951 and 1975. Programmes including Hancock's Half Hour, The Goon Show and Steptoe & Son were recorded here.
